CMYK or Spot Color: Planning Brand-Accurate Packaging
Understand the role of each color system
CMYK builds images from four process inks and is well suited to photographs, gradients and artwork with many colors. Spot colors use individually mixed inks and are useful when a specific brand color must remain consistent.
Match the method to the artwork
Packaging with photographic imagery usually relies on CMYK. Designs built around one or two critical brand colors may benefit from spot inks, while some projects combine process printing with a dedicated spot color.
Approve color under controlled conditions
Use agreed color references and review proofs under consistent lighting. Paper tone, coating and finishing can change the perceived result, so evaluate the complete material stack.
